Series of Tubes #1.5 - Saving "Heroes"
This week was part one of the two-part arc “The Eclipse” that’s supposed to save “Heroes”. Well, let me share some of my own ideas on how to fix the show I once loved, but now just tolerate, hoping it will get better.
1. Get Peter his powers back
He used to be the most interesting character on the show. Now he’s just a whiny bitch (and Nathan told him as much in this week’s episode, in a monologue that seemed to come straight from the fans). I know some people think he was getting TOO powerful, but Superman has a ridiculous power set, too, and everyone loves Superman.
2. Get rid of Primatech, Pinehurst or both
This show was way more interesting when it dealt in realities, not shady companies controlling everything. The whole Primatech vs Pinehurst, Petrelli vs Petrelli storyline has taken it to another level of pain.
3. Get Claire back to a somewhat normal life
The cheerleader hasn’t done much cheerleading -- or attending school, or dating, or spending quality time with the family -- this season. Claire was cool because she didn’t have offensive powers and lived a very normal life in some respects. Now she’s all emo and trying to be a badass. Just stop.
4. Kill off at least, let’s say, 4 characters
Heroes got spread way too thin. So let’s do this: Parkman, gone (which frees him up to re-unite with JJ Abrams on “Fringe”). Daphne, gone (she’s useless without Parkman). Any of the Ali Larter triplets, gone (she’s not a good actress, and having her play these new characters is just stupid). Random baddies, gone (I’m looking at you, fire-throwing guy and fear-smelling guy).
5. Fix Mohinder
Stop trying to turn him into the fly. Stop making him work for the bad guys. Just stop. Mohinder was supposed to be the Heroes link to the real world. Now he’s more unbelievable than any other character. Get him back to normal and things will be OK.
Now, there are other things that can be done too, but this is a start.

Fave 5 - Movies of 2008
The past few weeks have seen plenty of summer’s biggest movies come out on Blu Ray, and that will continue over the next few weeks. So now seemed like as good a time as any to pick my favorite movies of 2008.
5. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Sure, this movie is incredibly stupid, but just like the first one, it’s become a go-to movie when I want to watch something funny. Plus, Neil Patrick Harris is over-the-top hilarious as... Neil Patrick Harris.
4. Cloverfield
It’s hard to believe this movie came out in 2008, considering I remember hearing about it way back in 2006. But it was a mid-January release, and it was very good. Sure, there aren’t many answers, but sometime there don’t need to be answers for a movie to be good.
3. Iron Man
Let me just say there is a HUGE gap between 4 and 3. Really, it’s 1a, b, and c, then 4. Iron Man was AWESOME. It exceeded every expectation I had for it. The cool thing about Iron Man? I know there’s going to be a sequel, which should be awesome, but I’d be set if this was the only movie in the Iron Man series. It was that good.
2. WALL•E
Pixar movies are usually good, but this one went above and beyond. A movie with a message that’s also enjoyable? Holy crap. I didn’t think that was possible. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s beautiful. Who cares if it’s animated. It should be a Best Picture nominee.
1.The Dark Knight
Best. Movie. Ever. I will not argue this.

SportsBytes #3.6 - The Math of 2010
I wrote about this 3 weeks ago, but with LeBron scheduled to play in New York tonight -- fresh off a game at New Jersey -- it needs to be addressed again: the Summer of 2010 is nearly 600 days away.
LeBron James plays for the Cavaliers, not the Knicks, not the Nets, not the Pistons.
With all these teams clearing out cap space, the media jumps on how much the Knicks, Nets, Pistons, etc. will be able to do in 2010. Well, the Cavaliers will be able to do just as much.
Currently, the only Cavs under contract in 2010-11, assuming LeBron doesn’t exercise his player option, are Mo Williams ($9.3M), Delonte West ($4.7M), Daniel Gibson ($4.0M) and Darnell Jackson ($854K). They’ve also got a $1.5M team option on JJ Hickson’s rookie contract.
Let’s assume they pick up that option, plus have cap holds for the 2009 and 2010 first-round picks at about $1M each (which is about what it would be for a bottom-5 first-round pick).
Add up those salaries and you get a cap number of about $22.4M for 7 players.
For 2008-09, the salary cap is set at $58.68M, which was an increase of 5.48%. Assuming similar increases for 2009-10 and 2010-11, the salary cap will be set at $65.29M for 2010-11.
That means, at $22.4M in obligations, Cleveland would be $42.89M under the cap. For a player with 7 years experience, which LeBron James would have in 2010, the maximum salary is 30% of the cap -- or approximately $19.6M.
So, assuming they don’t do anything crazy over the next 2 years, the Cavaliers would have room to sign 2 “max” players in 2010 -- just like the Knicks, Nets and plenty of other teams. they’d even have close to $4M left to fill out their roster.
Plus, Cleveland has the bonus of being able to sign LeBron to more years and money than any other team. So, speculate all you want. It’s more likely that LeBron ends up right back where he started.

College Football Top 10
It’s that time of the season -- hard to figure things out, so I’ll just let the play on the field decide things (shouldn’t that be the case in the postseason too?)
10. Ohio State
Well, Michigan was no problem. Now they just sit back and wait. Boring.
9. Boise State
I’m not sure they’re going to get a BCS bid. Only the top non-automatic qualifier is guaranteed a bid. So unless they jump Utah (which they shouldn’t), they’ll probably settle for a lower-level bowl. Lame.
8. USC
I feel like they should be higher now, but I have a problem jumping a team over teams that keep winning, especially off a bye week. Let’s see how badly they crush Notre Dame and UCLA, and then we’ll reassess.
7.Utah
6.Penn State
Why’d I flip-flop these teams? Well, they’ve got very similar resumes (though Penn State has a loss). Their common opponent? Oregon State. Penn State destroyed the Beavers, Utah got a close win. So I have to think Penn State would beat Utah head-to-head. We probably won’t find out in the BCS, since Penn State will go to Pasadena, and Utah will probably end up in the Orange or Fiesta bowls.
5. Texas Tech
4. Oklahoma
3. Texas
How do you separate these teams? Well, here’s my shot: Texas has a neutral site win in this “mini-conference” and lost on a last second play. Oklahoma had a blowout win, and a 10-point loss. Texas Tech had a last-second home win, and a huge loss. So that’s how I figure Texas is on top, even with the loss to Texas Tech.
2. Florida
1. Alabama
This one will get sorted out in the SEC Championship Game. Which Florida will win. Probably handily. And then we’ll really have a BCS mess. Good luck sorting out 7 major conference 1-loss teams.

Series of Tubes #1.4 - Fringe
One show I’ve been recording all season but hadn’t caught up on until this week was “Fringe”. Everyone I know who watches it told me I would love it, but once I fell behind, it was hard to find the time to catch up.
Now that I’m caught up (I watched all 8 episodes in the span of 2 days), I’m hooked. So let’s break down the good and the bad of “Fringe”.
The Good:
-The “fringe science” itself is incredibly interesting, and almost seems realistic. It isn’t magic, and while it doesn’t always seem feasible, it’s fun.
-It’s got elements of a procedural (solving the crime/mystery) without the boring CSI-type forensics (which are usually replaced by the fringe science).
-The Walter Bishop character is among the most interesting on television, and most of the other characters (Peter, Olivia, etc.) have depth behind them.
The Bad:
-Not enough Massive Dynamic. If you’re going to introduce this evil company that could be behind all of this, we need to see them more than once every two episodes for a minute.
-This other group that seems to have popped up is convoluting the main story.
-I’m not sure I buy the character of The Observer.
The show isn’t flawless by any means, but it’s s definitely laying the groundwork to be one of the best on TV.

SportsBytes #3.5
• I still can’t believe the Redskins lost to the freakin’ Cowboys at home. The worst part about it? Marion Barber actually helped my fantasy team. Next year, I’m definitely not doing fantasy football (I know I said that last year, but I got sucked in again this year). I need to care more about the real games again.
• The Cavaliers are off to a great start. I really feel like this year’s team is put together well enough to succeed, not only in the regular season, but also the playoffs. Mo Williams is the right kind of point guard to play alongside LeBron -- one who doesn’t need to dominate the ball.
• I can’t believe Dustin Pedroia won the AL MVP. I know he had a good season, but he’s definitely not a traditional MVP candidate. He didn’t hit a huge number of homers, and, honestly, he’s short. He just doesn’t look like an MVP.
• According to a report in the New York Daily News, Pedro Martinez wants to come back to the Mets. I can’t express enough how opposed to this I am. At this point, Pedro is 37 years old, hasn’t pitched a full season in 3 years, and in 2 of the last 3 years, he’s had an ERA+ of under 100 (i.e., worse than league average). He simply can’t be relied on as a rotation starter. So, no, Pedro, you can’t come back.

College Football Top 10
It’s that time of the season again, where upsets usually happen. Only, they didn’t at all this week, so there’s very little movement from the fictional Top 10 that I forget to post last week.
At this point of the year, I’m tired of comparing relative strengths of wins from 2 months ago, so let’s instead look ahead and try to project, based on what’s left for these teams.
10. Ohio State
I despise ranking this team this highly, but they haven’t been bad the past couple weeks. Terrelle Pryor is going to be a great quarterback. OSU’s only remaining regular season game is an easy win against Michigan, then they wait for their bowl bid.
Projected W-L: 10-2
Projected Bowl: Capital One Bowl
9. Boise State
2 games stand in the way between Boise State and another unbeaten regular season. Neither of them is a huge challenge -- 6-4 Nevada and 6-4 Fresno State. The Broncos should be BCS bowling again.
Projected W-L: 12-0
Projected Bowl: Fiesta Bowl
8. USC
At this point, the only thing standing between USC and the Rose Bowl is... Oregon State? That’s right, if both teams win out, the Beavers get the automatic BCS bid. I don’t see that happening, though. USC should beat Notre Dame and UCLA, while Oregon State loses to Oregon in the season finale.
Projected W-L: 11-1
Projected Bowl: Rose Bowl
7. Penn State
Thanks to the win over Ohio State, all the Nittany Lions have to do to go to Pasadena is win next week against Michigan State. While no pushover, the Spartans shouldn’t block this run for the roses.
Projected W-L: 11-1
Projected Bowl: Rose Bowl
6. Utah
1 game left... the rivalry game with BYU. This game would have been even bigger if BYU was still undefeated, but it’s a pretty big deal for Utah. Big enough that the Utes won’t blow it.
Projected W-L: 12-0
Projected Bowl: Orange Bowl
5. Oklahoma
This is a HUGE game this week against No. 1 Texas Tech. For the Sooners, it means either having a shot at at BCS game or settling for the Cotton or Sun Bowls. Even if the Sooners do get past Texas Tech, they’ve still got OK State looming.
Projected W-L: 11-1
Projected Bowl: Fiesta Bowl
4. Texas
1 regular season game left, against a crappy Texas A&M team. But check this out -- if Oklahoma beats Texas Tech and there’s a 3-way tie in the South, the tiebreaker is the highest BCS ranking, which would probably, in that scenario, be Texas. So then it’d be Big 12 Title Game, then likely BCS title game for the Longhorns.
Projected W-L: 12-1
Projected Bowl: BCS National Championship Game
3. Florida
The Gators are already locked into the SEC Championship Game, and have regular season games left against The Citadel and Florida State. 2 easy wins before the showdown with Alabama, which I see the Gators winning.
Projected W-L: 12-1
Projected Bowl: BCS National Championship Game
2. Alabama
So if I’ve got Alabama losing to Florida, the only two questions left for the Tide are if they’ll lose before then and where they end up.
Projected W-L: 12-1
Projected Bowl: Sugar Bowl
1. Texas Tech
Wow, so how much does this suck for Texas Tech. In my projected scenario, they finish 11-1, with the 1 loss coming to another 1-loss team, and probably finish no worse than 5th in the BCS Standings. But because only 2 Big 12 teams can get BCS bids, they end up in the Cotton Bowl. It’d be the first time since the 30s that the Red Raiders played in back-to-back January bowls, but that would be of little consolation to their fans.
Projected W-L: 11-1
Projected Bowl: Cotton Bowl

Buffy and Joyce - My Immortal
This was, BY FAR, the hardest video for me to put together. It’s an incredibly emotional subject, with incredibly powerful scenes, set to an incredibly sad song.
Buffy Summers and her mother Joyce had the kind of relationship every parent has with their child -- only in this case, Buffy was the slayer. As the slayer, Buffy was destined to die early, and she did -- twice. Only, both times, Buffy came back. Joyce, on the other hand, did not. Her death was the re-defining moment of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, for better or worse.
I hope you enjoy my video. Please let me know if you do.

Finally on the Facebook bandwagon...
Well, it only took 4 years and some pushing from PooZ, but I finally have a Facebook page.
Much like this blog, the page is still a work in progress, but I'll try and keep up with it. If you're reading this blog, well, honestly, I've probably already sent you a friend request, but if I haven't, then just shoot me one.
Go Internet!

SportsBytes #3.4 - LeBron not a Piston
Just one topic this week, but it’s a biggie.
The Pistons acquired Allen Iverson on Monday, and that freed up lots of future cap room for them. That cap room has led some columnists to speculate that the Pistons are positioning themselves for a run at LeBron James in the summer of 2010.
First off, all this LeBron in 2010 speculation assumes that LeBron will opt out of the final year of his contract. That’s a lot of money to leave on the table, but he’ll do it for a new long term deal.
As for the Pistons, after the Iverson trade and the Rip Hamilton contract extension, the Pistons only have about $25 million in salary dedicated for 2010-11. They’ll probably have to extend Rodney Stuckey, but that shouldn’t take too much out of their cap room.
OK, so the Pistons can, financially, make a run at LeBron. Never... Gonna... Happen...
IF LeBron wants to leave Cleveland (and that’s still in the “if” category) he’ll want 2 things: a championship contender, and a major market. Detroit is moving in the wrong direction in the championship category. They keep going to the conference championship and keep losing to teams with superstars. LeBron already plays on a team with complementary players. He wants to play with another superstar (say a Kobe, or someone who would join him on the Knicks).
As for a major market, Detroit, despite the population, isn’t one of them. It’s the 11th-largest city in the country, but it’s not a media market on the level of New York or L.A.
One last thing. Under the current NBA CBA (which may not matter by 2010), Cleveland can offer more years and money than any other team. If LeBron is dead-set on leaving, the Cavs can try to work a sign-and-trade with the team he’s going to. There is NO chance of Cleveland and Detroit doing a sign-and-trade. ZERO. They hate each other. That’d be like the Red Sox and Yankees working out a Papi-for-ARod trade. Never... Gonna... Happen...
Vote Dummy!
I remember how much fun I had on Election Day (and Night) in 2000, working at The Towerlight and constantly updating our web site as Florida kept going back and forth.
The rest of the week was pretty cool back then. We found some students at our school from Florida and talked to them about the election. We even got direct quotes from a poll worker, making for an award-winning story.
Obviously, the last election wasn't as fun, but it was still cool. This one is gonna be great. So go vote!

College Football Top 10
I’m not gonna go through each team one-by-one this week, but instead focus on some general thoughts.
-First off, yes, I jumped Texas Tech to number 1. I know I expressed lots of doubts about them early in the season, but they seem to play better defense when they need to.
-Florida and Texas are the best of the one-loss teams, both of them having lost pretty close games. However, I have to keep Texas ahead of Florida because of the caliber of opponent the Longhorns lost to.
-Yes, Utah and Boise State will remain in the Top 10 as long as they’re unbeaten. Ball State probably won’t get in until there are more teams with 2 losses.
10. USC
9. Oklahoma
8. Oklahoma State
7. Boise State
6. Utah
5. Florida
4. Texas
3. Penn State
2. Alabama
1. Texas Tech

I LOVE Kelly Clarkson!
Remember last year when I went to Kelly Clarkson’s concert at Mohegan Sun and did a whole week full of Kelly Clarkson-related posts? Well, I was thinking about doing that this week.
Then, some stuff happened at work, and I just didn’t feel like posting at all. I was feeling pretty down about stuff. That was, until last night.
There are plenty of things that can make me feel better, but quickly moving up toward the top of that list is a Kelly Clarkson concert. I was just so happy to be there hearing Kelly’s voice in person, that all my worries just faded away. She has that magical hold over me.
I’m not gonna do a full concert review, because, let’s be honest, the whole thing was awesome. Instead, I’m gonna cover some moments, ramblings style.
MOST WORK-RELATED MOMENT: From the seats I had, I could see all the sound equipment on the side of the stage including... a TelePrompter! Now, every night when I do a show, I sit right next to a prompter, so seeing them using one at a concert was a little weird.
MOST RANDOM MOMENT: During the middle of “Miss Independent”, one of the guitarists broke out into the main guitar riff from “Iron Man”. How cool is that?
iPHONE COMMERCIAL MOMENT #1: I did this at the last Kelly concert I went to, so I had to do it again. During the performance of a song (last time: “Behind These Hazel Eyes”, this time “A Moment Like This”) I went into voicemail mode and recorded a greeting. So enjoy that for the next month or so.
HAPPIEST NEW KELLY MOMENT: During her “My Decemeber” Tour, Kelly performed a lot of songs I love, but she didn’t do “Beautiful Disaster.” She did it at this show, and, as is usually the case when I hear the live version of this song, I had a tear in my eye by the end. She also did “A Moment Like This”, but “Beautiful Disaster” was the kicker for me.
iPHONE COMMERCIAL MOMENT #2: (OK, lemme do this as much as like one of the commercials as possible). “This is how you enter the App Store. And this is how you search for a voice recording app. And this is how you download one, right to your phone. And this is when you realize, this is how you can record ‘Since U Been Gone’ and ‘Because of You’ to listen to whenever you want.”
LAMEST TECHNOLOGY MOMENT: When my camera’s battery died. I really need to buy a new digital camera. My current one is only 4 megapixels and has a 3x zoom. Plus the battery lasts about 90 minutes. Kind of lame.
BEST NON-CONCERT RELATED iPHONE MOMENT: During one of the Reba-only performances (they did a bunch of duets, but sometimes performed solo), I had to check my phone to see the score of the Texas-Texas Tech game. I was thrilled to see Tech up 22-3, and even happier when I got home just in time to see the game-winning TD.
MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT: When I yelled out “I LOVE YOU KELLY!” at the top of my lungs... while making the “I Love You” sign... with both hands... for the third time. Still, it was worth it.
MOST GUY-LIKE MOMENT: Look, let’s be honest, it’s not very masculine to be attending a Kelly/Reba concert, especially by yourself. But I did have a “guy” moment at one point, when I started taking pictures of Kelly’s ass. There are lots of people in the media who claim Kelly is “fat”. Not even close. Kelly has curves. Beautiful, sexy curves. And a phenomenal ass.
BEST POST-CONCERT MOMENT: I couldn’t get enough Kelly during the show, so I was blasting my Kelly playlist in the car as we crawled toward the exit of the parking lot. A few people cheered as they walked by. That was fun.
BEST REBA PERFORMANCE: I’m not a Reba fan, but I do appreciate her voice. And she did a fantastic job with “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”.
BEST KELLY PERFORMANCE: “Behind These Hazel Eyes”. Not even close. Of the 4 songs she did solo, this is by far my favorite, and the way she emotes at the
BEST DUET PERFORMANCE: “Because of You” -- Reba and Kelly performed this as they did on Reba’s deuts album, and it was the highlight of the show.

Waiting for Kelly
PooZ will probably make fun of me for posting this, but I'm sitting in Section 113 of the Arena at Harbor Yard, waiting for the Reba/Kelly Clarkson concert to start. It was supposed to start at 8, but no concert in the history of mankind has started on time. I'll keep you posted, and throw some pictures up here when it's over.
