30 Years of Adam: 1997
Adam Reisinger, the creator of AdamReisinger.com, turns 30 on May 17, 2010. As part of the countdown to his 30th birthday, AdamReisinger.com looks back on May 17th each year since 1980.
May 17, 1997 was a Saturday, which means I wasn't in school, and I probably had requested the day off from work. In fact, I'm 99% certain I did, and had a birthday party that day. I really don't remember much about that party, so sorry if you got me a kickass gift that year.
I do remember the Game 7 between the Rockets and Sonics in which Houston's Big Three of Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and Charles Barkley outplayed the Sonics dynamic duo of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, advancing to the conference finals. Houston eventually lost to the Jazz, who themselves lost to the Bulls in the NBA Finals.
I also remember Silver Charm winning the Preakness, giving him the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Of course, Silver Charm ended up being edged by Touch Gold in the Belmont Stakes, and we still haven't had a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 -- or two years before I was born.
Oh, I should mention the Mets, who beat the Rockies on May 17, 1997, but were still in fourth place in the division at the end of the day. It'd be a couple more years before they were actually good again.
