When Emma Stone was first added to the cast of the "Spider-Man" reboot, I thought, "Wow, this will totally work. She's the perfect Mary Jane."
Then, when it was revealed that she'll be playing Gwen Stacy, not Mary Jane Watson, my immediate reaction was "that's gonna suck." Well, the first images of Stone as a blonde are out, and I'd like to revise my reaction to, "ya know, this might work."
Here's Stone as a blonde, at the "Trevor Live" show (credit: Superhero Hype):
Now, how well does that compare to the comic?
Well, if we're comparing it to classic Gwen Stacy, from the 1960s and 1970s, not that great. But I get the sense that's not what they're going for here. Check out "Ultimate" Gwen Stacy, from an issue last year drawn by David Lafuente:
In addition to matching the look better, "Ultimate" Gwen is more of a match for Stone's personality -- or at least the personality of the characters we're used to seeing her play. She's got an edge that classic Gwen never had, and it'd be a waste of Stone's talents to have her play the bland-but-loved version of Gwen when there's a more exciting version of Gwen out there right now.
And, just to show you how much this look works for Stone, let's take a look at them side-by-side:
Yeah, you know what? I'm 100% OK with that.
